A merino wool blanket gives you the warmth of wool with a soft feel, and merino is the collection we make in the most sizes and colors. Our merino throws are 80% merino wool and 20% nylon, woven in our family's own mill in Ukraine, in three sizes and about 30 colorways, from $49.90 to $69.90.

That makes a soft merino throw blanket for the couch well under $100, and shipping is free across the US from our warehouse in New Jersey. On our own 1–5 scale, merino rates 4 for warmth and 4 for softness.

Why 20% nylon?

Our merino throws are not 100% merino, and we say so openly. The 20% nylon (polyamide) is there for durability: it makes the fabric stronger and helps the throw keep its shape through everyday use, folding and airing. The warmth and the soft feel come from the 80% merino.

The double-sided throws are denser and heavier. The patterned 55 × 79 in throw is the lightest of the three and comes in chevron, corner chevron, diamonds, squares, stripes, gradient squares and a Christmas design. All three are throws rather than bed blankets: none is sized to hang over the sides of a queen or king bed.

How soft is a merino wool throw?

Merino is a fine wool. Its fibers bend away from the skin instead of prickling, which is why a merino wool throw feels soft rather than scratchy. Like all wool, it takes up moisture without feeling damp and doesn't hold on to odors easily. For more softness, the cashmere-merino blend (90% merino wool, 10% cashmere) rates 5; for more warmth, pure new wool rates 5 but feels coarser. Our guide merino vs cashmere vs wool compares the fibers in detail.

How to care for a merino blanket

The label on our merino throws says do not wash. Wool freshens up in the open air, so airing is usually all a merino throw needs: hang it outdoors for a few hours, out of direct sun and rain. When it needs a proper clean, have it dry-cleaned. Our guide how to wash a wool blanket also explains home washing on a wool cycle, which you do at your own risk.

If a throw isn't right for you, you can return it unused within 30 days.

Frequently asked

Is a merino wool blanket itchy?

Merino is a fine wool whose fibers bend away from the skin, so it feels soft rather than scratchy; our merino throws rate 4 out of 5 for softness on our own scale. For even more softness, look at the cashmere-merino blend (90% merino wool, 10% cashmere).

Can you machine wash a merino wool blanket?

Our merino throws are labeled do not wash, so airing and dry cleaning are the safe options. If you wash one at home anyway, use a wool cycle with cold water, at your own risk; our washing guide explains how.

What size merino throw should I buy?

For one person on the couch, 51 × 67 in (130 × 170 cm); to wrap up from shoulders to feet, 55 × 79 in (140 × 200 cm); for two people or the top of a twin bed, 59 × 85 in (150 × 215 cm).

Why is there nylon in a merino throw?

The 20% nylon makes the fabric stronger and helps the throw keep its shape. The warmth and softness come from the 80% merino wool.

How much does a merino wool throw cost?

From $49.90 to $69.90, depending on size and design. Shipping is free across the US, and unused throws can be returned within 30 days under our returns policy.
